The​ ​17th​ ​served​ ​primarily​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Western​ ​Theater.​ ​The​ ​XVII​ ​was​ ​commanded​ ​by​ ​major​ ​general​ ​James​ ​B. McPherson​ ​and​ ​fought​ ​proudly​ ​at​ ​Vicksubrg,​ ​Chattanooga,​ ​Atlanta​ ​and​ ​were​ ​the​ ​key​ ​Corp​ ​involved​ ​in the​ ​famous​ ​“March​ ​to​ ​the​ ​Sea”​ ​and​ ​capture​ ​of​ ​Savannah.
