This unique area of France still considers itself culturally independent from central France, relating significantly with their Celtic historical roots. The flag, called Gwenn-ha-Du in Breton (meaning Black and White) was created in 1923 by Maurice Marchal, a leader in the Breton National Movement for independence. Today it is recognized as the official flag of the French Region of Brittany.
