About the Dorr Rebellion & its Variant Flag
Considered a landmark example of civil war within an American state, the Dorr Rebellion sought to introduce a new constitution and reform voting rights for the citizens of Rhode Island. In 1841, the disenfranchised residents, known as Dorrites, created a separate government and began displaying the Dorr Rebellion flag.
About the Dorr Rebellion
Under Rhode Island’s 1663 colonial charter, only male landowners were permitted to vote. This meant that city dwellers and factory workers were excluded from voting, and the government was controlled by a small rural elite. In 1841, Rhode Island residents began demanding broader democracy. Led by Thomas Wilson Dorr, the rebellion established a parallel government and wrote its own constitution for the state.
The Dorr Rebellion was ultimately defeated militarily, and Dorr was later convicted of treason. However, as a result of the rebellion, Rhode Island adopted a more liberal constitution in 1842, and expanded eligibility to vote.
About the Dorr Rebellion Flag
Although little is known about the origin of the Dorr Rebellion flag, some speculate that it was made by the wives of Dorr Rebellion members. The square blue-green flag features a gold border and the motto, “No terms with tyrants” in gold lettering, clearly expressing the Dorrites’ dismay with the Rhode Island government and its antiquated voting policies.
