Historical Military Flags & Battle Flags

Flags served an incredibly important purpose in the conflicts of the past. The national flag and the unit flag were both used to mark locations, and serve as rally points in the midst of the smoke and death of a battlefield.

At Gettysburg Flag Works, we're proud to preserve our nation's past by offering high quality historical military flags. Whether you're celebrating our nation's history by displaying these flags at your home or business, or you're looking for top of the line flags to use for historical re-enactments, our selection is second to none.

Civil War Flags

Both the Union and the Confederacy used a variety of flags between 1861 and 1865. For instance, the Original Civil War Union Flag flown during the attack on Fort Sumter looked much like our existing American Flag, but with only 33 stars, while the first flag associated with the Confederates States of America is known as the Bonnie Blue Flag. You’ll find both of these flags and dozens of others in our Collection of Historical Civil War Flags.

For flags associated with the Irish infantry brigade regiments, which fought under the Union army during the Civil War, check out our Collection of Irish Brigade Battle Flags.

Fort Flags

America’s first 200 years of existence featured an unrelenting push of Westward exploration and expansion. Frontiersmen and explorers paved the way, dotting newly discovered landscapes with trading posts that often grew into full fledged military fortifications. These forts lent protection against danger, both natural and that of man, with soldiers defending from enemies both foreign and domestic.

Naturally many of our nations conflicts involved battles at or near Forts, including the notorious siege of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and the famous bombardment of Fort Sumter during the opening of the American Civil War. Forts, and the flags that flew above them, capture important periods of America in turbulence, distraught by conflict and should be remembered as important milestones in the history of our country.
