About the No Quarter Given, All-Black Jolly Roger Flag
The most recognizable pirate flag, known as the Jolly Roger Flag, features a white skull and crossbones on a black field, but the black-on-black version, referred to as the No Quarter Given Jolly Roger Flag, has an even more ominous meaning.
Meaning of the Jolly Roger Flag
Pirate ships disguised themselves as any other merchant vessel until they were within striking distance of any enemy ship. Then they would hoist the Jolly Roger flag, announcing their intention to seize the opposing vessel, and demanding their surrender.
Meaning of the No Quarter Jolly Roger Flag
The Jolly Roger flag instilled fear in merchant ships, and most would surrender when the formidable banner was raised. However, if a ship refused to surrender peacefully, battle ensued. The Jolly Roger was lowered and replaced with the all-black Jolly Roger Flag, signaling that the pirates would give no quarter, or show no mercy, to the enemy.
