Gettysburg Flag Works Featured on CBS Sunday Morning
The team at Gettysburg Flag Works recently welcomed the CBS Sunday Morning show to our headquarters in Upstate NY. They gathered footage of our local flag manufacturing business and spoke to owners Maria Coffey and Patrick Doorey for a feature on the American Flag and the current state of patriotism in our country.
Patriotism and the American Flag in 2024
CBS News was looking to explore what the American flag currently stands for, so they came to our team of flag experts for an inside look at American flag sales and what our nation's flag has come to represent.
While every modern American flag has 13 stripes and 50 stars, the meaning of the American flag as a symbol has evolved over the centuries since its initial inception. Now, what our flag stands for remains open to interpretation - and flying the American flag has become a bit more nuanced as our country has become more divided.
A Shift in American Pride
There's been a notable shift in patriotism since it reached an all-time high following 9/11/01. In the past 23 years, we have seen a marked decrease in American pride. According to a recent Gallop poll, only 41% of Americans are extremely proud to be Americans in 2024 - a significant decrease from 70% back in 2003.
And it turns out that present day American pride seems to follow party lines, at least when it comes to flying the US flag. A significantly larger percentage of Republicans are proud to fly the flag, while present day Democrats are notably less prideful.
Our Take on American Pride and Flying the US Flag
While the statistics paint one picture about how American pride looks in this day and age, we think the American flag is for everyone. It's for all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, and it stands for everybody. We encourage all of our customers to fly the American flag and showcase their pride for our great nation.
