About the Revenue Cutter Flag

The Revenue Cutter Flag is a historical ensign that was flown by the United States Revenue Cutter Service, the precursor to the U.S. Coast Guard.

History of the Revenue Cutter Service

The United States Revenue Cutter Service was established by an act of Congress in 1790 upon the recommendation of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. Originally referred to as the Revenue-Marine, it was a customs and tariffs enforcement agency under the authority of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The agency was renamed the Revenue Cutter Service in 1894, likely because of the fast and agile cutter ships it used to carry out its duties.

In wartime, the Revenue Cutter Service was placed under the command of the U.S. Navy, and often engaged in military service. It was also involved in anti-piracy operations in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, and began conducting life-saving cruises to assist mariners in need as early as 1832.

After more than 100 years of independent service, the Revenue Cutter Service was combined with the U.S. Lifesaving Service in 1915, and the two formed the present day U.S. Coast Guard.

About the Design of the Revenue Cutter Flag

Like many historical flags, the Revenue Cutter Flag went through several iterations between 1790 and 1915, but all of the variations include 16 vertical red and white stripes to represent the 16 states in the Union during that time. All of the cantons also feature a stylized eagle surrounded by 13 stars to represent the original 13 colonies. However, the design of the eagle and placement of the stars varies.

In this popular version of the Revenue Cutter Flag, the eagle holds a red and white shield and is fully encircled by the navy 5-point stars.
