Whiskey Rebellion Flag

The Whiskey Rebellion was the first domestic uprising in the U.S. to be suppressed by government militia. President Washington used militia and negotiators to enforce a whiskey excise tax on distilleries in Western Pennsylvania, resulting in two civilian deaths. Although the tax was deeply unpopular and repealed during Thomas Jefferson's presidency, the rebellion spurred the formation of political parties opposing government overreach.
